  1. Bookending the collection with jazz from the UK's top performers are the Big Screen trio (David Newton, Tom Farmer and Matt Skelton) playing a Rogers & Hammerstein classic from The King and I and the inimitable Claire Martin, who signs off the collection with a track from her brilliant album 'Time & /5(21).
  2. Babel is a UK label, founded in , specialized in jazz music of UK origin. One of their latest is this album from Dice Factory. A quartet comprised of four young players: Tom Challenger (sax), George Fogel (piano),Tom Farmer (double bass) and Jon Scott (drums). They started in as a jam band, and now they are ready for their debut.
  3. Tom Farmer - double bass Shaney Forbes - drums Special Guest: Julian Siegel - bass clarinet/tenor saxophone Great second album by this English ‘inside and outside’ quartet and the first album I heard by them! Dedicated to Eric Dolphy, this features inspiring original compositions and is a great one.

  5. Empirical: Out 'n' In ( [], Naim): UK group, based in London, a quartet with Nathaniel Facey on alto sax, Lewis Wright on vibes, Tom Farmer on double bass, and Shaney Forbes on drums, expanded here with Julian Siegel on bass clarinet and tenor sax. The occasion for the latter is an interest in Eric Dolphy, who provides the two covers.
  6. JRR DISC 1. Artist John Handy. Title Dancy Dancy. Composer Handy. Album 2 nd John Handy Album. Label CBS.
  7. Empirical: Connection ( [], Cuneiform): British postbop quartet -- Nathaniel Facey (alto sax), Lewis Wright (vibes), Tom Farmer (bass), Shaney Forbes (drums) -- fifth album since They play fast and hard, and while the sax is a little rough around the edges, the vibraphonist is a talent deserving wider recognition.
  8. Matthew Shipp: 4D ( [], Thirsty Ear): Solo piano. I've lost track of how many solo albums Shipp's done since the late s -- half a dozen I'd guess. Seems like he's moved away from developing melodic lines and into rhythmic patterns built from dense chords, which sort of parallels his group context work, but is more bare and sparse here.
  9. Michael Cain: Solo (, Native Drum Music): Pianist, b. , AMG lists seven albums since (but missed this one, and who knows what else). Google really wanted to dispatch me off to some British actor. Solo piano and a bit of electronics: slow, gentle, has some appeal. B+(*).
